Antiquarian historians were quick to judge reformer Gerrit Smith's Black antebellum Adirondack farm colony a failure, but archival sources, argues Amy Godine, reveal a much more hopeful, nuanced, and enduring story, and a role for Clinton County's antislavery activists, too. A Q&A and signing for Godine's new book, The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier (Cornell) to follow. Amy was the recent recipient of the 2024Spirit of John Brown Freedom Award. This event is co-hosted by the Clinton County Historical Association and the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association.
