Tuesday Movie Club Brings Films and Discussion to Area Libraries

A new monthly screening series at libraries across the region. Films from PBS favorites like POV and Independent Lens will be paired with thoughtful community discussion. The first film is How to Build a Library.

Inspired by the format of book clubs, community members are invited to join in for the screening, and then stick around to talk about the film with thoughtful discussion questions.

"Libraries and public media are natural partners, sharing a mission to serve communities with free access to information," said Jennifer Kowalczyk, Director of Engagement and Marketing, Mountain Lake PBS. "There's something powerful about watching a film in a room full of neighbors, rather than alone on a screen. We can't wait to bring public media's best documentaries into these trusted spaces."

“Libraries provide opportunities for people to discover new ideas and connect with others. We’re excited to partner with Mountain Lake PBS to bring engaging films and meaningful conversations to libraries across our region,” said Anja Bouchard, Coordinated Outreach Librarian, CEFLS.

The first film to be featured on Tuesday, Sept 29, How to Build a Library, is the story of two intrepid Nairobi women as they take on an ambitious task: transforming a formerly whites-only library into a vibrant cultural hub for the whole community. Along the way, they confront the lingering ghosts of Kenya's colonial past and ask hard questions about how a place shaped by history can become a space that belongs to everyone.

Eight libraries across the region will be hosting events with How to Build a Library:

Keeseville Free Library - 6PM

Peru Free Library - 12PM

Plattsburgh Public Library - 12PM

Schroon Lake Public Library - 1:30PM

Wells Memorial Library, Upper Jay - 2PM

Admission is free, and open to everyone.
