April 1, 2026
The event is a season-long fishing event, with the goal of bringing awareness to the Great Chazy River and its ecological wonders, especially its trout. With 20 miles of Public Fishing Rights (PFR’S) and five public parking areas, it provides unique trout fishing with little fishing pressure.
From Lake Roxanne Dam downstream, the river is managed as stock extended, while upstream of the dam, the river is classified as a native reach, non-stocked to its headwaters. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation stocks the North Branch with 6,000 trout during April and May. The river has natural forage and is a phenomenal fishery.
By entering the fishing series contest, which starts April 1 and ends Sept. 30, participants will join a group of resolute individuals who will be fishing but more importantly collecting data that will benefit the river’s future as a cold-water fishery. Participants will document any holdovers, native fish and take photos before releasing the trout back into the river and will document the species, time, and location of the catch, which will determine the points earned. As an angler, those interested will participate as a citizen scientist collecting data for the trout’s future. The Fishing Chaos phone app is required to download data for the tournament.
