Juneteenth Colors of Freedom in the Adirondacks

There will be an art exhibit of Black artists at the SUNY Plattsburgh Art Museum. Exhibits will include:

  • Reflections: Intimate Portraits of Iconic African Americans – General Colin Powell, Lois Mailou Jones, Dr. Dorothy Height, Congressman Charles Wrangel, and more.
  • "a process, a discovery": A celebration of Black artists in SUNY Plattsburgh's Collections - The title is a quote by poet Yusef Komunyakaa, reflecting on his writing practice upon his visit to SUNY Plattsburgh in 1995. Works on display include artwork from the Plattsburgh State Art Museum and ephemera from Feinberg Library Special Collections that highlight notable Black artists, writers, and musicians.

Saturday, June 21, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

After an opening prayer and explanation of the reason for Juneteenth celebration, a bus tour (pre-registration required; see form below) will depart the museum to visit Underground Railroad sites in the Keeseville / Peru area. Afterwards the bus will go to the John Brown Farm. There will be food, entertainment, presentation, and a chance to learn more about Juneteenth. A Colors of Freedom Award will be given to an individual(s) or organization for their recognition of freedom for all.

The bus will return to the North Star Underground Railroad Museum at the end of the day.
