How did Americans in the nineteenth century face the ever-present specter of death? In this presentation, Ellen Adams and Leni Vradelis will give an overview of mourning practices, including memorial embroidery, hair jewelry and artwork, and mourning attire and funeral customs. We’ll look at the effect that the Civil War had on mourning, and consider why many of these practices died out (no pun intended) in the early 20th century.
