Adirondack Coast Tourism Sector Enjoys Strong Holiday Weekend
Area Businesses Report a Busy Fourth of July Holiday
Plattsburgh – 7/9/10 – The Adirondack Coast Visitors & Convention Bureau (VCB) announced today a strong showing for the tourism industry over for the long Fourth of July weekend.
The Fourth of July holiday coupled with beautiful weather and a strong Canadian dollar provided area hotels, restaurants and attractions with a strong weekend - for some, the best in years.
Tim Bresett, General Manager, Ausable Chasm & Ausable Chasm Recreation Center, Inc. witnessed the attraction’s highest visitation in over a decade. “Our Canadian friends from Quebec and Ontario have been coming down across the border in higher numbers than we’ve seen in many years.” Bresett added, “It appears that the ‘rubber-tire’ family vacation has become more appealing than in recent years, making our region that is within a half-day drive for over 9 million potential tourists, a popular destination.”
Mike Perrotte, Promoter for Airborne Speedway, stated “Our Fourth of July show was the best attended event we’ve had and one of the best in the Speedway history. Actually, we’ve been up all season long. “
If La Quinta Inn & Suites is any indication, area hoteliers are also faring well. Vicki Demarse-Giroux, La Quinta’s General Manager, said, “We filled every room in the house on Friday and Saturday. We even sold 80% on Sunday which is outstanding. It was very nice to reconnect with many of our customers from the north, who we have not seen in sometime.”
Michele Powers, Director of the Adirondack Coast Visitors & Convention Bureau noted, “We were anticipating a strong summer season in concert with the exchange rate. Having so many businesses reporting record numbers so early in the season is always great news.”
Powers is confident that many of the new attractions and summer events will continue to draw people to the area. The much anticipated Mayor’s Cup Festival & Regatta will be held this weekend followed by more pro bass fishing tournaments, the new Summer Wine Tour and Velo Quebec’s Le Grand Tour that will roll into town in early August with 2,000 Canadian cyclists. September will feature an additional pro bass tournament and, of course, the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Weekend.
